Circuit switches are selected by the circuit configuration they need to control. The pole and throw arrangement determines how many independent circuits the switch can handle and how many positions each circuit can switch between. Use this guide to choose the configuration that matches your design.
Choose the Right Circuit Configuration
Each configuration below matches a real switch type in our range. Select a configuration to view the corresponding switch products.
SPST – Single Pole Single Throw
One pole and one throw. Controls a single circuit with a simple on/off action.
SPDT – Single Pole Double Throw
One pole and two throws. Directs a single circuit between two positions.
DPST – Double Pole Single Throw
Two poles and one throw. Switches two independent circuits on or off together.
DPDT – Double Pole Double Throw
Two poles and two throws. Controls two circuits, each with two positions.
3PST – Three Pole Single Throw
Three poles and one throw. Switches three circuits on or off together.
3PDT – Three Pole Double Throw
Three poles and two throws. Controls three circuits, each with two positions.
4PST – Four Pole Single Throw
Four poles and one throw. Switches four circuits on or off together.
4PDT – Four Pole Double Throw
Four poles and two throws. Controls four circuits, each with two positions.
