Understanding Rocker Switch Wiring Diagrams

A comprehensive guide to safely and correctly wiring rocker switches for various applications.

What is a Rocker Switch?

A rocker switch is an on/off switch that rocks back and forth when pressed. One side of the switch is raised while the other is depressed, creating a see-saw motion. They are commonly used in household appliances, automotive applications, industrial equipment, and marine systems.

WEUP manufactures premium rocker switches with various configurations including single-pole single-throw (SPST), double-pole double-throw (DPDT), illuminated versions, and waterproof designs.

Basic Wiring Principles

Safety First: Always disconnect power before working with electrical wiring. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow local electrical codes.

1

Identify Terminals

Most rocker switches have 3 terminals: power (line), load (to device), and ground. Illuminated switches may have additional terminals for the light.

2

Connect Wires

Use appropriate wire gauge for the current rating. Connect the hot wire from power source to the switch’s line terminal, and the wire to your device to the load terminal.

3

Secure Ground

Always connect the ground wire to the switch’s ground terminal (if present) and ensure proper grounding to the electrical system for safety.

Switch Type Terminals Common Applications WEUP Series
SPST (Single Pole Single Throw) 2 Simple on/off control for lights, fans WRS-100 Series
DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) 6 Motor reversal, 2-circuit control WRS-200 Series
Illuminated 3-4 Dashboard controls, dark environments WRS-IL Series
Waterproof 2-6 Marine, outdoor equipment, washdown areas WRS-WP Series

⚠️ Important Safety Notes

  • Always verify the switch’s current rating matches your circuit requirements.

  • Use wire connectors or terminal blocks for secure connections–never use electrical tape alone.

  • For outdoor or marine applications, always use waterproof switches with proper sealing.
